While I do agree that this is remarkably unjust, that the status of a man within society determines the punishment he receives… Is it not also doing the homeless man a great service by providing him with regular meals and guaranteed shelter for the next 15 years at least? As it says plainly, “he needed the money to stay at the detox center and had no other place to stay and was hungry”. I’m not American, and I know the prisons aren’t exactly amazing there (seriously though, it’s a prison. They don’t need croquet). But I think that long-term, this was a wise decision made by a judge who had the best interest of the individual at heart.
